Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan to Strengthen Intergovernmental Dialogue

As part of his visit to Baku, the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov held a meeting with the Chairperson of the National Parliament of Azerbaijan, Sahiba Gafarova.

Following introductions with the members of the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan, the Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan introduced the members of the Turkmen delegation.

Sahiba Gafarova informed the National Leader of the Turkmen people and the Turkmen delegation about the work of the Azerbaijani Parliament and showed them exhibits at the Milli Majlis Museum.

The National Leader of the Turkmen people left a commemorative entry in the Book of Honorary Guests.

During the official meeting between the Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan and the Chairperson of the National Parliament of Azerbaijan, attended by delegations from both countries, Sahiba Gafarova expressed confidence that the meeting would strengthen interstate dialogue, including at the legislative level.

Recalling with warmth her 2022 visit to Turkmenistan, Sahiba Gafarova took the opportunity to once again express gratitude for being awarded the Order of Turkmenistan "For Contribution to the Development of Cooperation".

She noted Turkmenistan’s high international standing, attributed to its peace-loving foreign policy as a neutral state, and emphasized Azerbaijan’s high regard for relations with brotherly Turkmenistan.

The National Leader of the Turkmen people sincerely thanked the Azerbaijani side for their warm hospitality on behalf of the Turkmen delegation and fondly recalled his meeting with Sahiba Gafarova during her official visit to Turkmenistan in December 2022.

The Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty expressed confidence that the current meeting would serve as an important impetus for deepening fraternal Turkmen-Azerbaijani ties, including through parliamentary diplomacy, in line with the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between the parliaments of the two countries.

Highlighting the role of friendship groups established in the parliaments of both countries in enhancing interparliamentary dialogue, the National Leader of the Turkmen people stressed the need to intensify the practice of regular meetings.

He expressed confidence that the parliamentarians of Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan could make a meaningful contribution to achieving these goals and jointly address issues on the global agenda.

In this regard, he proposed that Azerbaijani parliamentarians, together with their Turkmen colleagues, develop a cooperation algorithm in areas such as interparliamentary dialogue, gender equality, and women’s and youth diplomacy.

Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov also emphasized the broad prospects for strengthening bilateral cultural, scientific, and educational cooperation, proposing to consider organizing youth scientific and educational forums under the auspices of the two parliaments.

The Speaker of the friendly country’s Parliament underscored the importance of the proposals made by the Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan and confirmed Azerbaijan’s continued commitment to expanding cooperation through legislative institutions.

At the end of the meeting, an official photo ceremony was held with the National Leader of the Turkmen people Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, Chairperson of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova, and members of both delegations.

The Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty then visited the Alley of Honor, where the National Leader of the Azerbaijani people, Heydar Aliyev, is buried.

Paying tribute to the prominent statesman and politician of Azerbaijan, the National Leader of the Turkmen people laid a wreath at his grave.

The Hero-Arkadag of Turkmenistan also laid flowers at the grave of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s mother.

Later, the Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan visited the Victory Park, where he paid tribute to Azerbaijan’s national heroes who gave their lives for their homeland and laid a wreath at the monument.
