On November 11-12, 2024, an international expert-level meeting and the first international event to launch Technical Guidance on Protecting critical Energy Infrastructure from terrorist attacks took place in Ashgabat.
The event was organized by the Government of Turkmenistan jointly with the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Office (UNOCT) and the Government of the Russian Federation.
The two-day event was aimed at raising awareness of threats to energy infrastructure, attracting international experts to discuss best practices in this area.
The meeting participants reviewed the main aspects of protecting critical energy infrastructure and exchanged views on strengthening cooperation at the international level. The speakers shared the main vectors of activities undertaken at the national level.
It was noted that the UN General Assembly resolution adopted on the initiative of Turkmenistan on December 19, 2023 "The key role of reliable and stable energy connectivity in ensuring sustainable development" provides for the consolidation of the efforts of the international community in overcoming energy crises and calls for ensuring the reliability and stability of cross-border energy supplies.
The United Nations Global Programme to Protect Vulnerable Targets from Terrorist Threats, implemented jointly with a number of international organizations, has been supporting Member States since 2021 in building their capacities, developing links between experts and identifying best practices in the field of critical infrastructure protection.
This international event, held in Ashgabat, was also the initial launch of Technical Guidance on protecting critical Energy Infrastructure from terrorist attacks.
